Happy Fourth Kind Of

Ahhhhh the Fourth of July. I already posted that video disclosing my complicated feelings with it so I won’t drag y’all through that again (I might) but like, the complexities of celebrating that day run deep. I couldn’t bring myself to wear red, white, or blue so I opted for black and denim.

Initially I hesitated with going with black because I was nervous it would be too dramatic. “Am I low-key protesting?” But then I thought... maybe I am. With all that our country has stood for, and I don’t mean “freedom and justice for all*" (*some), I mean racism and the usurpation of human dignity; with all that’s going on at the border — State-sanctioned psychological trauma, inhumanity of the highest order; with a loud percentage of the country still proudly supporting a pathological liar and egomaniac in the White House…. Yeah, black felt appropriate.

Even for as difficult as this day is dogmatically, I at least got to spend it in the best way. Found maybe the ONE outdoor spot in San Diego that wasn’t overrun, and set up camp with 2 of my faves for a gorgeous picnic and better conversation, it was lovely.

The dress I went for is a simple black mini with lace from mimi and red, paired with a classic lightwash chambray from Madewell.

How was y’all’s Fourth of July? How are we all holding up?

Also, apparently I need to be drunk for every photo shoot because I have tried my whole LIFE to nail this look and all it took was 4 glasses of rosé.
